KUALA LUMPUR, 20 May – Malaysia's future esports stars will converge at Sunway Velocity this week for the inaugural Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Academy League Malaysia (MAL MY) Playoffs. The Playoffs will see the top eight teams from the MAL MY Regular Season compete for the title and the lion's share of the USD 20,000 prize pool.

Organised by MOONTON Games and IO Esports, MAL MY was launched this year and functions as the developmental leg of the Malaysian Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) esports league system – after MLBB Professional League (MPL) Malaysia. MAL MY aims to build the esports talent pipeline in the nation by providing young players with a more structured entry into the world of professional esports, and prepares Malaysia to host the M6 World Championship in December, MLBB's most prestigious international tournament.

Playoffs format and schedule revealed!

The Playoffs will take place at Sunway Velocity Mall, Vanity Atrium, Ground Floor, from 24 May to 26 May. Entry is free, with seating available on a first-come-first-served basis. Additionally, attendees will receive in-game rewards and stand the chance to win exclusive MLBB merchandise and an Infinix GT 10 Pro gaming smartphone – the same device used for MAL MY!

The Playoffs will feature four teams from each conference – the Challenger Conference, comprising teams from a combination of third-party grassroots tournaments and an Open Qualifiers held in February; and the Affiliated Conference, which features the junior teams from Season 13 of MPL Malaysia. It will be a sudden-death tournament, with each team to compete in Best-Of-Three (BO3) matches.

Additionally, the Playoffs will host the crucial "Challenger vs Defender" match at 11:00 AM (GMT+8) on 26 May, right before the Grand Final. The "Challenger vs Defender" match will pit the 2nd-placed Challenger Conference team from the Regular Season, DXORIGINZ, against the 9th-placed team in MPL Malaysia Season 13, Barracuda Esports, to see which team will earn a spot in Season 14 of MPL Malaysia.

The promotion-relegation mechanic was introduced along with the launch of MAL MY this year. The MAL MY Regular Season's 1st-placed Challenger Conference team, Red Riot, earned automatic promotion to MPL Malaysia Season 14; MPL Malaysia's 10th-placed team this season, Bountee Esports, was relegated to MAL MY and will compete in the MAL MY Challenger Conference in Season 2.

MAL MY Regular Season sets viewership benchmarks

The fully-online Regular Season obtained impressive viewership numbers in its inaugural season – 31,715 Peak Concurrent Viewers (PCV), 4,148 Average Viewers (AV), 877,118 Hours Watched (HW), according to Esports Charts. This is several times higher than the first season of MPL Malaysia in 2018, which has 6,544 (PCV), 1,483 AV, and 64,373 HW, reflecting the growth of MLBB Esports in Malaysia.
