Six teams secured berths
in the Playoffs in Week 5, while the relegation dogfight heats up!
The MPL Malaysia Season 14
league table after Week 5 of the Regular Season.
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, 7 October – Malaysia's top six Mobile
Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) teams have secured their spots in the MLBB
Professional League (MPL) Malaysia Season 14 Playoffs, to be held in Johor from
31 October to 3 November. With the final week of the Regular Season still to play,
the stakes now turn to which teams will gain crucial advantages in the Playoffs
brackets by placing higher in the Regular Season, as well as to the relegation
dogfight.
At the end of Week 5,
Selangor Red Giants top the standings with 20 points, followed by Team Vamos
and RED Esports with 14 points apiece.
Week 5 Recap: Six Teams Join The Season 14
Playoffs x Southern Festival
Week 5 saw a
roller-coaster of results which saw the early confirmation all six Playoffs
teams – Selangor Red Giants, Team Vamos, RED Esports, Monster Vicious, JP
NINERS, and TODAK will journey to Johor later this month. There, they will vie
for the USD 100,000 prize pool and two slots at the M6 World Championship,
MLBB's flagship international tournament, which will be hosted by Malaysia this
year.
All eyes were on Team
Vamos after their humbling at the hands of defending champions, Selangor Red
Giants, in Week 4. The fan favourites had been on a five-match winning streak
before their 2-0 loss to the league leaders and were widely expected to overcome
Monster Vicious and rebuild their momentum. However, it was their all-Malaysian
opponents who found the result instead; the tournament dark horses stunned Team
Vamos 2-1 in the Week 5 opener to bounce back from their losses against
relegation candidates, RSG MY and Homebois, last week.
Monster Vicious secured
their spot in Playoffs after snatching a point in a 1-2 loss against Team HAQ
in the final match of Week 5. While they will be pleased at advancing to the
Playoffs, they will rue their hugely inconsistent form against the league's
supposed lesser teams, having now lost against the bottom three teams despite
having defeated heavyweights TODAK, RED Esports, and Team Vamos.
Monster Vicious' Ammar
Asyraf "Martzyyyy" bin Abdul Rahman celebrates after stunning Team
Vamos 2-1; the Mid Laner was named MVP of the Match after stellar displays as
the mage hero Aurora.
Team HAQ's surprise win
over Monster Vicious has given them some wiggle room at the foot of the table,
with a precious point now separating the Season 10 champions from RSG MY. The
Season 7 champions could only earn a point in Week 5 after succumbing 1-2 to
RED Esports. With Homebois, the Season 12 champions, rounding out the bottom
three, it seems likely that one of the MPL Malaysia champions are destined for
the drop this season.
In addition to RSG MY, RED
Esports also notched a 2-0 win over Homebois to climb into third place. The
REDs have put in a series of consistent performances since unleashing their
full-strength team in Week 2 to steadily rake in the points. Their core of Filipino
duo, Gold Laner Lee "Owl" Gonzales and Jungler Stephen
"Sensui" Castillo from Blacklist have played pivotal roles in their
rise, with the former named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Match against
Homebois.
Elsewhere, Selangor Red
Giants defeated JP NINERS 2-0 after shackling the NINERS' star Jungler, Maxwell
"Maxx" Alessandro, across both games. The Red Giants' Exp Laner, Mark
"Kramm" Rusiana, was crucial to this strategy, harassing and
disrupting Maxx first as the hero Gloo, followed by Khaleed, to heavily
restrict his impact on the match. Kramm recorded 7 kills, 2 deaths, and 11
assists to be named MVP of the Match.
Kramm is all smiles after
securing the win and the plaudits as MVP of the Match.
Week 6: Things Can Go South Quickly
The final week of the
Regular Season will involve two groups of teams with completely different
priorities. With the top six teams having already achieved qualification to the
Season 14 Playoffs x Southern Festival, the six Playoffs Contenders – Selangor Red Giants, Team Vamos, RED Esports,
Monster Vicious, JP NINERS, and TODAK – will now focus on their final Regular
Season standings as these will determine the Playoffs brackets. In contrast,
the Relegation Battlers – Team Rey,
Homebois, Team HAQ, and RSG MY – are fighting to stay in the league next
season. The 10th-placed team is guaranteed relegation, while the 9th-placed
team will battle against the 2nd-placed team from the MLBB Academy League
Malaysia (MAL MY) Challengers Conference, with the winner set to secure a spot
in MPL Malaysia Season 15.
A top two finish will be
the priority for all Playoffs Contenders as it would allow both teams to play
one match less by skipping the Upper Bracket Quarter Finals entirely. However,
only one more spot remains up for grabs, with Selangor Red Giants having
already secured the coveted Top Seed. Team Vamos are the frontrunners to secure
second place; they already occupy the position and have an extra game in hand
over third-placed RED Esports. They also have winnable matches against RSG MY
at 5:45 PM GMT+8 on 11 October, followed by Team Rey at 12:30 PM GMT+8 on 13
October. However, the momentum-based team are currently sitting on two
back-to-back losses and will need to display stronger mental fortitude to
against an RSG MY fighting for survival. Their success will be determined by
how much they want that top two position.
RED Esports are breathing
down Team Vamos' necks and will be looking to capitalise on any slip-ups. RED
Esports will be looking to take down sixth-placed TODAK on 12 October at 12:30
PM GMT+8, who themselves will be looking to improve their position in the
table.
The clash between the
free-falling champions, Homebois and RSG MY, will follow at 5:00 PM GMT+8, with
the threat of relegation looming large for the loser. RSG MY will need to win
at least one game to match Team HAQ's 7 points and for Team HAQ to lose to
Selangor Red Giants for RSG MY to have a superior number of aggregate points.
Day 3 on 13 October will
see Team HAQ take on Selangor Red Giants in a do-or-die match at 5:30 PM GMT+8.
Anything Team HAQ takes from the defending champions will constitute a major
upset, but they will be counting on Selangor Red Giants having nothing but
pride to play for at this stage of the season. Unfortunately, they will be
going up against one of the league's most disciplined teams, who are also
looking to replicate their record in Season 13 by winning all nine of their
Regular Season matches.
Note: During the Regular
Season, teams will be ranked based on the number of points obtained (2-0 = 3
points; 2-1 = 2 points; 1-2 = 1 points; 0-2 = 0 points). Should multiple teams
be tied on points, the rankings will be determined by the number of winning
games (aggregate points), with teams to be given 1 point for winning a game and
deducted 1 point for losing a game. The next tiebreaker criterion is the tied
teams' head-to-head record. Should multiple teams still be tied, additional
Best-of-One matches will be held.
